We are finishing up our first day in Sorrento and it's been good and bad. We departed Rome Friday morning, and after a wicked Thursday night out in Trastevere (followed by a dance party + Texas bball at the apt) we were slower than planned to get up Friday. For the first time this trip we missed our planned train and had to take the equivalent of the short bus to Naples. It turned out to be half as expensive and we got our own little car in which we all slept, so it was kind of a plus one. The other bonus of spending an extra hour in the Roma Termini was that we got McDonalds for breakfast...and I'm not gonna lie: it hit the goddam spot.
So, in route to Sorrento from Naples, we stopped off for 3 hours at Pompeii. Again, I have to say that we have had perfect weather this whole trip. I personally have resisted saying this out loud for fear of jinxing it, but Fids just throws it right out there like some kind of jerk or something, so we spent the entire afternoon freeeeeezing and avoiding rain at Pompeii (she also made E-Roc's purse break). UGHS. But it was a worthy side trip, and LJ led us on the Rick Steves walking tour, which was great as always. I just love this learning. We got into Sorrento about 5 p.m., and our cab driver from the train station was this guy named Antony (Tony) who offered to take us today on a day-long driving tour of the coast for 40 benjis each. DONE! Our hotel here is called a deluxw hostel. We had resisted telling LJ that it was a hostel because she has proven to be hostile towards hostels. We waited until we were drunk Thursday night to give her this info, and she was not happy. But our place is quite nice. After a bottle of wine in the lobby we wandered around and found a place to eat. We were quite disheartened because no place seemed to be open and were all kind of thinking "this place f-ing blows" but found out this morning that we just didn't walk far enough to reach the main square where we would have found a plethora of options. After another delicious meal bitching about our respective families (KIDDING) we headed home early for a well deserved rest night.
This morning we met Tony for our tour of the coastline. He informed us when he was picking us up that (1) his cousin would be driving us and (2) there would be another couple on the trip. My immediate thought was that this was going to wind up with us spending 40 euro for a trip into sex slavery (which i recently found out also means you get murdered), but it was perfectly lovely. The other couple with us was from Dallas (holler) and their son works for Fidelity (double holler). So we set out and had a really wonderful morning with Tony until we got just outside of Amalfi town wherein the road was shut down because rocks had fallen on the road from the ridiculously strong winds (minus 1000 mother nature). Since there is only one road along the coast, we had no choice but to end our tour early and head back to Sorrento. Major bummer. Tony was quite apologetic (almost annoyingly so), and dropped us off in the town center with directions to the city's newest restaurant and (more important) to the limoncello factory.
Sorrento is famous for their lemons and limoncello, and when we walked into the building we were bombarded with samples. I think they want to get you a little drunk so you'll buy more. It worked. After a lovely (though expensive) lunch of the shore, we braved the cold and winds back to our hotel, where I sit now while everyone gets ready for a night out. We're planning to hit some karaoke and get our dance on. Should be fabulous (as always).
We are very close to the end...LJ and Fids catch their planes on Monday, while the rest of us catch a plane back to Milan that afternoon, and back to the States on Tuesday. Whereas three days ago I couldnt believe how much time we still have left, now I can't believer how little time we have left. We plan to spend it lounging, lunching, strolling and trolling (for the men the Trevi fountain promised). Yet again, they are yelling at me about leaving, so must say Ciao!
Me and my soiled Fodors were super sad to return to reality (especially since my 3 hour Dulles layover turned into a rockin' SEVEN hour layover...seriously long day).
ReplyDeleteThere is a check-yes-or-no question on the US customs form about frolicking with foreign farm animals so I guess LJ is no longer welcome here.
I am happy to report that you will have to check your DVR's immediately upon returning. Guess which character makes their triumphant return to 30 Rock? Here's a hint: "Excuse me Imperial Guard, how long do these arson trials typically last?"
Miss you guys and PLEASE return in your next post with a trolling success story!
I don't really think it's fair for me to be on a jury, cuz I can read thoughts.
