Liza has been obsessed with finding some f-ing flower fields to f-ing frolick in. I thought it was a joke initially, when in fact it bordered on obsession. Before hitting the road we (she) called an audible and decided that instead of heading to Eze, the "jewel of the Riviera," we should go to Grasse, a town in the interior hills north of Cannes that was surrounded by flower fields and is the world capitol of perfume.
It was not.
But despite the lack of flower fields, Grasse was kind of awesome once we were able to navigate away from the strip malls and into the city center. We stopped at a perfume factory called Fragonard, and tested our noses with mystery fragrances. Liza for some reason took exceptional pleasure in shoving the less pleasant testers into everyone's faces. We then had lunch at a a little cafe/creperie that we just wound ourself into after being rejected by another location. It was arguably one of our best meals, possibly because we got tickets to a free show when The Heff got locked in the bathroom. We strolled around the town, did some pyramids, saved a horse, rode a cowboy, and then FINALLY AFTER DAYS AND HOURS OF DELAY moved on to Eze.
Eze is a coastal town just south of Monte Carlo. It's perched high on a hill, with crazy views of the Mediteranean. It's a medieval old town, with cool shops and restaurants, and at the very top is cactus garden and at the very very top are castle ruins. La Mer spent some time learning about the castle/history situation, but I wasn't paying attention since I'm not really of the "learning" persuasion. We celebrated our successful day of countryside visitation domination with some drinks at the Chateau Eza where we were surrounded by not one but two just-engaged-moments-before couples.
We got back to Nice, parked the car for the night and grabbed a drink at Distilleries Ideales while waiting for our chosen place for dinner to open - a restaurant devoted entirely to cheese. The bad news is that apparently they stayed closed for Tuesday. The good news is that we didn't toxify our apartment with lactoid enduced farts all night. Instead we tried a place a few doors down, that could have gone horribly wrong but instead went horribly right. My only regret is we never made it to Dehli Belly....damn you Nice! Next time!
The four of us split a cheese platter to start, which confused the hell out of our server since the French usually do the cheese plate last. I have a hard time believing that no one has ever done this before. Then Liza and I split some more foie gras (this one made in house) and some lamb with provencal herbs. The Heff had duck poop gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce and La Mer had some veal scalopini. All and all, probably (hands down) best meal of trip so far.
Early ferry on Wednesday morning, so we decided to grab some more vin, pack up and clean up the apartment and get to bed early. Somehow, yet again, that meant after 1 a.m.
